Overview of Training Programs
A skilled workforce is
the most important asset that an employer can have. We must make
sure that our signatory employers have the best-skilled and most
productive workers in our trades. That is why District Council 50
and its Local Unions offer education and training programs that
will make our members the most knowledgeable and highly-accomplished
craft workers in Hawaiis Construction Industry. These opportunities
include everything from top-flight apprenticeship programs and safety
and health compliance courses to journey person level continuing
education.
Apprenticeship
Apprentice training incorporates health
and safety training as well as skills training. Apprentices also
receive an education about how the union works and how they can
participate in our union. Unlike many other training programs, DC50's
program enables apprentices to receive wages and even get periodic
pay raises, while they are being trained. All registration, instruction,
textbooks and reference materials are furnished to members at no
direct cost to them. Once an apprentice has reached a journey person
level, our union continues to provide free training. Continuing
education in skills, materials, tools, and health and safety are
available to members who are all required to renew training on a
regular basis.
Safety and Health Training
Safety and health training is essential
to a long and satisfying career in our trades. A worker who is able
to work safely is an asset to his or her employer, a benefit to
co-workers, and likely to be a thorough and dedicated worker in
other respects as well.
We
have developed extensive health and safety courses covering all
of our trades and crafts. We continue to improve and expand the
content of our safety and health training as new information becomes
available. Members are required to keep their safety and health
in compliance and attend classes regularly.
Continuing Education
District Council 50 offers education and training
to keep our members working, now and in the future. This means providing
opportunities for continued Journeyperson training after completing
the apprenticeship program. Skill training is continuously available
to all members who want to perfect their techniques or learn additional
skills.
