AIA Rail Demonstration at the State Capitol on Monday, January 18, 2010

As many as 400 rail supporters came out to the State Capitol on Monday, January 18, 2009. Governor Lingle hosted a presentation by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) regarding the proposed rail system at the Hawaii State Capitol Auditorium. The panel discussed an at-grade rail system which would result in further delays and even the possibility of killing the rail project all together. District Council 50 members, as well as many other trades, came out to attend this important event in support of the elevated rail system. As we all know, the Rail will help stimulate our local economy by providing thousands of jobs in Hawaii that will in turn help to get our local people back to work.

Robert “Bob” Ha honored as the 2009 IUPAT Retiree of the Year

District Council 50’s Retirees’ Club President and Painters Local Union 1791 member Robert “Bob” Ha must have wondered why he had received a personal invitation from IUPAT General President James A. Williams to attend the 2009 IUPAT General Convention in Las Vegas. Sure, he and Jimmy Williams had become friends over the years, but why the invite? In the middle of the convention, Hawaii’s Bob Ha realized he was being honored as the first winner of the “Retiree of the Year Award.” The prestigious James A. Williams Bridge Builder Award was IUPAT’s way of honoring the many years of loyalty and service that Bob Ha has given to our union. In an unrehearsed, yet perfect acceptance speech, Bob congratulated General President Williams and his Executive Board on their re-election and thanked them for the honor. So next time you see Bob Ha at any of our District Council meetings, please be sure to congratulate him.

Calling all District Council 50 Retirees! If you are a recent retiree or have been retired for some time, please come out and participate in the newly formed District Council 50 Retirees Club. Meetings are held on the first Saturday of every month at the District Council 50 Headquarters Building 2240 Young Street, at 12:00 noon. We are currently in the process of selecting officers and ratifying the bylaws. For more information, please call 808-941-0991.
