Aloha United Way Annual Golf Tournament

The Aloha United Way (AUW) held its annual golf tournament on March 5, 2010, at the Pearl Country Club. Kicking off the fundraiser this year was the Golf Ball Drop event. A large crane dropped numbered balls into a designated golf hole. Balls that fell into the cup won prizes according to the position of the balls. Journeyman shop steward at Hawaii Metal Forming and Vice President of the Glaziers Local Union 1889, Joseph Naeole, was the 4^th Place winner of a Honda Generator. The event was able to raise over $8,000. District Council 50 proudly supports this worthwhile and wonderful event that assists families throughout the state who are in need of assistance. Congratulations to Joseph Naeole for being a proud participant and winner in the AUW Golf Ball Drop!

Glaziers Union Graduation on December 19, 2009

On December 19, the Glaziers, Architectural Metal & Glassworkers, Local Union 1889, celebrated the graduation of 35 apprentices. The Class of 2009, held its graduation at the Dole Cannery, Lanai Ballroom. All of the graduates fulfilled the criteria of 8 semesters or a minimum of 580 classroom hours and also completed working 10,000 apprenticeship hours. The International Union of Painters and Allied Trades, District Council 50, would like to recognize and extend its heartfelt congratulations to these outstanding members and wish them all the best in the coming years!

Hawaii Construction Career Day

Honolulu Community College hosted the annual Hawaii Construction Career Day on October 22 and 23. The nonprofit organization shared with Hawaii’s youth, insight and information into construction career opportunities. District Council 50 Floorlayers and Glaziers participated in this very interactive and hands-on event. The forum showcased construction companies, engineering firms, government agencies, university institutions and various construction organizations. In the construction trades arena, students were able to observe demonstrations and participate in practical activities. Students were introduced to a variety of skilled trades that stressed the importance of a good education to help prepare them for the future. DC50 staff, Roy Johnson, Derek Stewart, and Alvin Van Treese, enjoyed sharing with the students and hope that this experience helps to give them a glimpse into the construction industry.

Glazier’s Annual Picnic at Shriners Beach Club

On Saturday, August 29, the Glaziers held their annual picnic at the Shriners Beach Club in Waimanalo. This well attended annual event was filled with ono food, giveaways, games for the keiki and beautiful music and dance. “This is the union’s way of saying thanks and giving back to our hard working members,” said Roy Johnson.

No Jobs, No Justice!

The power of the union comes from the participation of the membership, and the time has arrived for us to unite, protect our quality of life and take back the work stolen by non‐union contractors. Hotel Owners, Developers, and the Public need to recognize that we will FIGHT to keep our work from going to contractors who do not respect local people.

Kahala Hotel recently awarded irresponsible contractors a 300‐hundred room renovation. What did we do about it? On Saturday, May 9, 2009, over 60 of our painters, tapers, glaziers and floorlayers representing District Council 50 peacefully protested the use of non‐union contractors at the Kahala Hotel.

Your Organizing Committee has targeted HOTELS as a key market that should only be awarded to union contractors and members, especially in these tough economic times.
