OSHA 30 Course

A District Council 50 OSHA 30-hour course was held in February. Successfully completing the course were the following painters and tapers: Byron Alop, Rommel Diaz, Jeremy Duarte, Glenn Keohohou, Jr., Grant Shiroma, Robert Verano, Roland Yamashiro, Darrell Yambaw, Orlando Gapusan and Benjamin Ladera.

Green Worker Training

District Council 50, through a partnership with the state of Hawaii has begun training workers in Green Construction. This course has been added to our standard HazLead class in 2011. The photo was taken at the first class on January 8, 2011.

The course prepares the worker for the special conditions that green and LEED projects have, and allows our signatory employers to pursue these jobs with confidence. Workers who complete the course know the importance of following the specifications to obtain LEED points, how to follow different jobsite rules and requirements, and the importance of a teamwork approach to these specialized projects.

Painters Local Union 1791 Annual Meetings

During the months of November and December, the Annual Painters Local Union 1791 Christmas meetings were held, and this year was no exception. District Council 50 traveled throughout the state to spread a message of encouragement and address issues ranging from the state of our economy to signs of a recovery. Members were informed that we need to look to the future of our union; not just concentrate about what’s not happening. Job actions, Project Labor Agreements (PLAs), Developer’s agreement, Rail, Transit Oriented Development (TOD) are things we need now to get back to work! Also explained was the recent structural changes that district council has gone through. DC50’s Organizing, Servicing, and Training Departments are providing a new approach with more accountability – seeking out innovative ideas to job creation and most importantly, working to build a stronger union. Over the past two year a lot of damage has been done to the economy, but the bottom line is – We need jobs! Your union will work hard to get things moving and will work tirelessly until all members are working again! Thank you for your loyalty, strength, and belief in District Council 50. Let’s all band together and strive to make 2011 a better and brighter year!

Painters Union AAA Winners- Fall 2010

The Painters Union recognized 3 apprentices who won the Apprentice Achievement Award for the Fall 2010 semester. They are (l-r) Ernest Santiago Jr. (A & J Painting), Terrence Derby Jr. (Endo Painting) and Jason Bartels (M. Shiroma Painting). Derby has won the award 2 times and Bartels has won it 3 times.

These apprentices were selected by our judges for superior all-around performance at school and on the job. Please congratulate these fine apprentices who continue to excel in the painter’s apprenticeship program.

Painters Union Graduation on December 5, 2009

On December 5, 2009, the Painters Union held a graduation ceremony for 43 apprentices at Honolulu Community College. Apprentices were honored for completing their related instruction and good attendance records. Eight apprentices from the graduating class had perfect attendance without missing a day of school for their entire apprenticeship. Congratulations!

Painters give back to help women in crisis

Responding to the call for help from Iwalani Tseu, the Painters Local Union 1791 volunteered their time to paint the interior of the Women’s Support Center in Ewa. Executive Board members, Randy Takayama, Kurt Nishimura and others donated their time and energy to give back to a well deserving cause and to the community. This venue will serve as a gather place for women in need of healing, respite and support. When completed, the Painters would have put in approximately 50 man hours of work. A big MAHALO goes out to Pittsburgh Paints for supporting this project and for providing the paint and material and to Randy and Kurt for their hard work and generosity.

Kapolei High School Workshop “Shadow a Union Journeyperson Day”

One year ago in September 2009 the ground breaking ceremony was held for Kapolei High School’s (KHS) full-scale construction project built entirely by KHS Woodshop students. This first of its kind, full-scale construction project encompasses two portable classrooms. The construction consists of all phases of planning from groundwork to roofing. Instructor Brian Ichida along with the collaborative efforts of the State Department of Education, the University of Hawaii Department of Education and private sector organizations teamed up to take a non-traditional program to the next level. Among these organizations is District Council 50’s own, M. Shiroma Painting. Owner Glenn Shiroma, Project Superintendent Shannon Alop and Foreman Byron Alop worked hard to solicit donations from various vendors to supply the project with paint, tile and of course — manpower. These union members took time out of their busy schedules to participate in the KHS “Shadow a Union Journeyperson Day.” The students were able to work side by side with our members and take part in this hands-on experience. A big MAHALO to M. Shiroma Painting for giving back to the community and for making a difference in our future generation!

Robert “Bob” Ha honored as the 2009 IUPAT Retiree of the Year

District Council 50’s Retirees’ Club President and Painters Local Union 1791 member Robert “Bob” Ha must have wondered why he had received a personal invitation from IUPAT General President James A. Williams to attend the 2009 IUPAT General Convention in Las Vegas. Sure, he and Jimmy Williams had become friends over the years, but why the invite? In the middle of the convention, Hawaii’s Bob Ha realized he was being honored as the first winner of the “Retiree of the Year Award.” The prestigious James A. Williams Bridge Builder Award was IUPAT’s way of honoring the many years of loyalty and service that Bob Ha has given to our union. In an unrehearsed, yet perfect acceptance speech, Bob congratulated General President Williams and his Executive Board on their re-election and thanked them for the honor. So next time you see Bob Ha at any of our District Council meetings, please be sure to congratulate him.
